چکیده

Although there have been no significant studies of the effects of different coupling chemistries, spacer arm length, or the nature of the functional group on the performance of ultrafiltration membranes, there is an extensive literature on these parameters in the field of chromatography. An optimal spacer arm ensures that the functional groups are placed a suitable distance from the surface of the solid support and are easily accessible to the macromolecules. Results from a variety of studies in ion exchange and dye-affinity chromatography suggest that the ideal spacer arm has : (1) proper length (at least three atoms); (2) no active center that could cause nonspecific adsorption; and (3) at least two functional groups, one to react with the base support and one to serve as the chromatographic ligand.

A Novel Nanofiltration Membrane Prepared with PAMAM and Graphene oxide for Desalination

Nanofiltration is increasingly gaining attention in many separation and treatment processes such as water softening, color removal and separation of medicines. Nanofiltration membranes are often negatively charged, displaying separation characteristics in the intermediate range between reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration. In this research, a novel nanofiltration membrane prepared with poly(amid...

Diffusional Contributions and Electrostatic Exclusion Effects on Transport through Ultrafiltration Membranes

1. Introduction Ultrafiltration is used for protein concentration and buffer exchange in the downstream processing of essentially all recombinant protein products [1]. Although ultrafiltration has traditionally been viewed as a convective pressure-driven process, with the separation determined on the basis of size, solute transport through ultrafiltration membranes is also strongly influenced b...

Protein and Lactose Separation by Modified Ultrafiltration Membrane using Layer by Layer Technique

Layer-by-Layer (LbL) is a method which can be used for nanoscale coating and surface functionalization of a material. LbL technique mainly uses the electrostatic attracting between charged materials (polyelectrolytes, nanoparticles, etc.) and an oppositely charged surface. In this study, protein separation (BSA) from lactose solution was carried out using the LbL self-assembly method, which was...

Self-cleaning Metal Organic Framework (MOF) based ultra filtration membranes - A solution to bio-fouling in membrane separation processes

Bio-fouling is a serious problem in many membrane-based separation processes for water and wastewater treatment. Current state of the art methods to overcome this are to modify the membranes with either hydrophilic additives or with an antibacterial compound. In this study, we propose and practise a novel concept to prevent bio-fouling by developing a killing and self-cleaning membrane surface ...

Activator Generated Electron Transfer Combined Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (AGET-ATRP) for Controlled Grafting Location of Glycidyl Methacrylate on Regenerated Cellulose Ultrafiltration Membranes

This investigation indicates the ability to selectively graft glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) only from the external surface of regenerated cellulose (RC) ultrafiltration (UF) membranes using activator generated electron transfer (AGET) atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). This controlled polymerization resulted in epoxy functionalized polymer brush ends. Further reaction of the terminal ep...
